Scenes Around a Theme

Themed montages that gather scenes across plays around a single question or figure.

A themed montage — scenes from several plays around one idea — lets Players of many ages perform Shakespeare together while keeping every part vivid. Themes we have used: Battle of the Sexes; Magic and the Supernatural; Fools and Fooling; Ruler and the Ruled; Rogues and Villains; The Generation Gap; Bullies (CU); Falstaff.

Theme cuttings are a Developmental Theatre inheritance — the Colorado Caravan’s 1970s repertoire assembled scenes around themes rather than full plays. See Legacy Timeline for the 1977 Pretenders scene list and other evidence of that era’s theme work.

Scenes gathered from across the canon around a single question or figure. Filter by theme below — chips are deep-linkable.

Choosing scenes: Start from what your Players already have memorized from other work; shave scenes internally; eliminate extraneous characters. That way you arrive at a themed montage that feels rehearsed, not assembled.

Archival Theme Scripts (1970s)

Two scanned typescripts from the Developmental Theatre archive. These are performance documents from the Colorado Caravan era, with visible handwritten blocking notes and pencilled cuts.
