What Happens in a Theatre Game?

  • Using dramatic techniques encourages expression and demonstrates understanding of what is being explored.
  • Each person feels, sees, hears, and embodies the experience.

  • Those involved often apply what they learn to every aspect of their learning process and, indeed, their lives.

— the level of group bonding it assumes:

Low

Strangers, new-year classrooms, first-day workshops. The game asks little of players and doesn’t require personal risk.

Medium

A group that has warmed up together but hasn’t yet built trust for exposed or vulnerable play.

High

An ensemble that already trusts each other; ready for risk, invention, and self-revelation.

Resignation vs. Resilience

Resignation says “there’s nothing I can do — the situation has decided for me.”

Resilience

The ability to recover from or adjust quickly to change, difficulty, or adversity. In DT:FC, resilience means replacing 'failure' with 'learning' — and getting up to explore a different direction.

says “the situation has changed, and so can I.” Theatre Games train the second reflex: players rehearse noticing what’s shifted, adjusting on the fly, and re-entering the moment without freezing. Every game in the Resilience competency strengthens that switch.
