Purpose, promise, and the five competencies

About DT:FC

What DT:FC is, what it’s for, and the life skills it builds.

What DT:FC is

Developmental Theatre: Fearless Creativity (DT:FC) is a fifty-year lineage of practices that uses theatre as a vehicle for developing the underlying competencies of creative work. Descended from the Colorado Caravan and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival’s NEA Title III residency (see the Legacy history →), the practice today reaches Players, Facilitators, and audiences in classrooms, community theatres, universities, and therapeutic settings.

The five competencies

Every DT:FC play, game, and workshop targets the same five competencies:

  • Attention — the discipline of being fully here.
  • Composition — the ability to shape a whole from parts.
  • Oral expression — language that lands.
  • Physical expression — the body as an instrument.
  • Context awareness — reading the room and responding to it.

These are life skills, not stage skills. The plays and games are the vehicle; the competencies are the point.

Who it’s for

DT:FC serves anyone who wants to grow those five competencies in themselves or in others: classroom teachers, community theatre facilitators, university educators, therapists, parents, and Players of every age. The Theatre Games library, Children’s Theatre plays, and Shakespeare adaptations are the three primary entry points.
