Resilience
The ability to recover from or adjust quickly to change, difficulty, or adversity. In DT:FC, resilience means replacing 'failure' with 'learning' — and getting up to explore a different direction.
What is Resilience?
Resilience is how to recover from — or adjust quickly to — changes, challenges, difficulties, hardship, or a twist in events or environments. It is a combination of elasticity and toughness that allows reevaluation, redefinition, reshaping, or an entirely new approach to a new set of circumstances.
In DT:FC, the motto for resilience is: “There is no failure, only learning.”
Resilience as Readiness
However you are in the present moment — however you respond to what is happening — this is a gift. Resilience is your readiness to be creative right where you are, right now. You may be:
- In a new situation requiring new responses.
- Needing to respond to an old situation in a novel way.
- Tired, grumpy, or confused — but continuing regardless.
- In a process of recovery from a significant experience.
- Managing repetitive daily stressors that tax body, mind, and emotions.
The root of resilience is the willingness to continue exploring.
What Resilience Looks Like
| Reasons | Results |
|---|---|
| Need to adapt quickly to external changes and demands | Flexibility in new contexts: manages where, who, when, what’s happening |
| Persevere to solution by exploring new information and different possibilities | Willing to explore without expectation of immediate answers; includes others’ ideas |
| Recover from negative or adverse events | Can determine if an environment is safe or threatening and respond accordingly |
| Honor own and others’ emotional reactions as information | Listens, seeks understanding, chooses engagement and honest connection |
| Readiness and ability to respond when needed | Cares for physical needs: deep sleep, healthy food, physical exercise |
Resilience in Theatre Games
Every DT:FC Theatre Game with a resilience focus builds the capacity to try, not-quite-succeed, adapt, and try again — without shame. The facilitator models this directly by maintaining a tone of “Let’s try again” rather than “That didn’t work.”
Games like Self Talk, Fire Tenders or Wet Blankets, and Tignishes all work with the internal messaging — body, voice, and emotional state — that determines whether a player rebounds or shuts down.
