Fearless Creativity

Draft

The belief that you have the talent, intelligence, intuition, and passion to solve any creative challenge. Coined by Roger Holzberg, it starts with ‘Say Yes, and…’ — and the five DT:FC competencies are how you build it.

Genesis

Roger Holzberg ignited the concept of Fearless Creativity. He fearlessly lives a creative life — Founder of ReImagine Well, actor, playwright, professor, one-time Disney Imagineer, athlete, and supporter of many individual artists and groups.

Roger was a participant of the original theatre experiments in the 1970–80s at the University of Colorado (C.U.) that created Developmental Theatre. In 2021 he visited founders Chuck and Lola Wilcox and told them: “What we learned then was to be creative… no, Fearlessly Creative.”

Roger teaches that the first action of Fearless Creativity is: “Say Yes And…”

Once you’ve said Yes, focused exploration follows.

Four Key Concepts

  • Creativity — we all have it; how to be Fearless
  • Constraints — the resistance that sparks creativity (see Constraints)
  • Cohesion — how well a group works together:
    Cohesion

How bonded a group is right now — the action or fact of forming a united whole. Every game is rated Low, Medium, or High — matching game to group cohesion is the facilitator’s core skill.

Using the Five Theatre Games Competencies

  • Physical Expression — experience it
  • Vocal Expression — selling it
  • Context Awareness — the who, when, and where; importance of collaboration and cooperation
  • Risk Assessment and Management — the who and how; constraints point the way to “Fearless”
  • Resilience — discovering the What through trials and experiences
