Honoring Our Guides

Acknowledging the ancestors, teachers, artists, and children whose work shapes DT:FC’s Children’s Theatre.

We are grateful perpetually for those who came before us as we evolve our training and decades of experience into an international Developmental Theatre: Fearless Creativity platform.

Oral-tradition ancestors

We honor our ancestors around the world who packed survival knowledge into stories they told down the generations. As the oral tradition faded into print we honor the storytellers, poets, read-aloud parents, and children’s book publishers who kept the stories alive.

Fred Rogers

We honor Fred Rogers for his Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood television program, where he taught children about the Land of Make Believe and closed each show with “I love you… just the way you are.”

Chuck and Lola Wilcox

We honor Chuck and Lola Wilcox for fearlessly creating the Colorado Caravan’s first children’s play as part of the worldwide oral tradition. We honor the actors who toured that play and brought back the first pictures and stories. The Wilcoxes and graduates of the Colorado Caravan went on to write multiple other plays in this old–new tradition.

The teachers who first told these stories

The original design for the Colorado Caravan was to provide Colorado Shakespeare Festival actors work touring a Shakespeare program to schools and other venues. Even before the program launched, requests arrived for a play suited to elementary schools. We honor the administrators, principals, and teachers who made it possible for thousands of students to participate — and all those who later created theatre companies, theatre departments, and programs that carried this tradition forward.

The children themselves

Each year the teachers sent the children’s thank-you notes and hundreds of pictures — usually around twenty per classroom. We honor those children whose pictures showed us what they were hearing and imagining. They fostered the knowledge base, and every play in this library has been shaped by their honesty.
