What’s Missing?

Observation and memory — training players to notice and retain details of their environment

Preparation

Place several articles in the center of a circle of players.
The objects should be varied enough to be interesting but not so numerous as to overwhelm; 6–10 works well.
Have a volunteer or second facilitator ready to help manage objects while the guesser is out of sight.

All players concentrate on the objects for 60 seconds. Encourage them to really look — shape, color, position.
One player steps out of the room (or turns their back and closes their eyes).
The group quietly removes one object and closes the gap.
The player returns and states which object is missing.
Celebrate correct guesses. If the player is uncertain, group can offer one hint.
Switch to a different player. Repeat.
To increase difficulty: use more objects, reduce observation time, or ask the guesser to name the object’s exact position, not just what it was.

Were participants able to understand the instructions and perform the activity?
Did observation memory improve over successive rounds?
Which players used systematic strategies (scanning left to right, grouping by type)?
How did the group support players who were uncertain?
