Tongue Twisters Relay

Articulation practice — using consonant-heavy phrases to develop clarity, mouth placement, and confidence in being heard

Preparation

  • No special space arrangement required; can be done in any formation.
  • Facilitator prepares a set of tongue twisters appropriate to the group’s age and ability.
  • Example tongue twisters:
    • Shy Sarah saw six Swiss wristwatches.
    • The seething sea ceaseth and so suffices us.
    • Red leather, yellow leather.
    • Big bad bug’s blood.
    • Tip of the tongue, and the teeth, and the lips.

Facilitation

  1. Facilitator demonstrates the first tongue twister, reminding players to pronounce consonants — especially at the ends of words.
  2. Group repeats each tongue twister several times together.
  3. Relay format: Facilitator assigns a different tongue twister to each small group of three. Each group:
    • Practices their sentence for clarity.
    • Memorizes it.
    • Moves around the room saying the sentence to others, as if in ordinary conversation.
  4. Players can then say their twister at different speeds: very slowly, then faster and faster until it trips — then slow back down.
  5. Optional challenge: say the twister in one breath; have a partner close their eyes and give a thumbs up/down on whether they could understand each word.

Evaluation

  • Were words clearly pronounced in place every time?
  • Can the line be delivered as a single flowing piece?
  • Did confidence in speaking aloud increase over the exercise?
  • Are players having fun?
