Body Orchestration
Using individual body movement and sound in a group — building collective rhythm and listening
Preparation
- Open space where players can stand in a loose group facing a leader.
- No materials required, though a small drum for the facilitator is helpful.
Facilitation
- Each participant privately selects a body part to represent. A draw-name technique can be used if the group prefers.
- Each participant privately chooses a sound for that body part.
- The leader (facilitator or a player) stands in front of the group. As the leader moves a specific body part, the players responsible for that body part make their sounds.
- Explore making a tune: the leader varies which body parts are activated, and at what speed.
- Different players can take turns leading the orchestra.
Evaluation
- Were participants able to understand the instructions and perform the activity?
- How effective were the body part and sound combinations?
- Was the group able to work cooperatively with the leader?
- Were participants able to create something that felt like a tune — even briefly?
